SUMMARY:Indigenous Engagement: A Research Summit on Cultural Heritage in an Era of Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) established a Task Force on Truth and Reconciliation\, which led to the publication of “Royally Wronged: The Royal Society of Canada and Indigenous Peoples”\, a volume dedicated to probing the complicity of the RSC in the marginalization of Indigenous knowledge and the destruction of Indigenous communities. \nThe inaugural summit\, taking place from November 4-6 in Vancouver\, British Columbia\, will focus on cultural heritage in alignment with recent work of the S7 group of Academies. \nJoin us from November 4-6 in Vancouver\, BC\, on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, and səlilwətaɬ/Selilwitulh (Tseil-Waututh) nations\, for the inaugural Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement. Hosted by the Royal Society of Canada in collaboration with the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi and the Australian Academy of Science\, this is the opening event of a three-year series of summits across our partner countries. \nThe summit will bring together leading scholars and community members from Canada and the Pacific to address the challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous academics today. Aligned with the S7 statement on “Science and Communication of Cultural Heritage: Knowledge and Public Awareness of Our Collective Roots“\, this year’s event will emphasize the importance of cultural heritage and Indigenous engagement. \n“With emphasis upon the rights of Indigenous peoples and how our academies may understand and act upon their responsibilities toward Indigenous engagement\, this event will explore how Indigenous perspectives on the sciences\, social sciences\, humanities\, and other areas of scholarly endeavor may provide an important part of our journey toward reconciliation\,” said Professor Frank Deer\, Chair of the Organizing Committee and President of the RSC College. \nABOUT THE EVENT\nIn a series of keynote addresses and panel discussions\, leading scholars from across Canada\, Australia and Aotearoa (New Zealand) will explore: \n\nHow should the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples inform the Academies’ work in respect to Indigenous Engagement?\nIn what ways may we engage with Indigenous peoples for the betterment of our respective academies and the public good?\nWhat institutional transformations are necessary to benefit Indigenous engagement?\n\nFavourite

SUMMARY:Canadian Sociological Association Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 57th Annual Conference of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) will be held in two sections. \n1. Virtual sessions scheduled from Monday\, June 3 through Friday\, June 7\, 2024.\n2. In-person sessions scheduled from Monday\, June 17 through Friday\, June 21\, 2024 as part of the Federation of Humanities and Social Sciences Congress in partnership with McGill University. \nCSA Conference delegates benefit from the opportunity to learn from\, and engage with\, scholars and practitioners working within the discipline of sociology. We are hoping that this new Conference format will improve accessibility for our members and the wider community. \n2024 Conference Theme: \nChallenging Hate: Sustaining shared futures \nWhile alarming images of a warming planet infuse the concept with a critical sense of urgency\, ‘sustainability’ transcends even the immense challenges posed by climate change\, urging recognition of the interconnectedness of human existence and global action on the overlapping social\, economic\, environmental\, and technological issues that threaten our future. \nAs members of the global community\, we share the responsibility to take on this multi-faceted challenge of a lifetime by way of concerted action across disciplines\, bringing into focus its unequal impact\, the bounds of our planet\, and in turn\, our solutions. \nFor this 2024 edition\, enmeshing the knowledges of diverse contexts\, and amplifying Black and Indigenous perspectives\, Congress invites scholars\, students\, policymakers\, and community members to reflect on what remains collectively attainable – and what must be done – in the face of this vast and complex imperative in order to bring forth solutions for today\, and sustain systems of tomorrow. \nThe Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) is particularly interested in the mobilization\, trajectories\, and social implications of social movements\, countermovements and solidarities in relation to Islamophobia\, Antisemitism\, and intersecting racism(s)\, gender fluidity and rising anti-2SLGBTQ+ coalitions\, the school curriculum\, vaccination requirements and the coalescence of seemingly ideologically disparate groups (e.g. the far-right and religious groups). \nFavourite
